Activism and Advocacy: Jane Fonda's Call to Action at USC
Jane Fonda, the American actress and activist, had an engaging discussion on climate change with Dean Willow Bay, who leads the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. Addressing an audience of more than 200 students, Fonda leveraged her narrative skills and charisma to establish a profound connection with the students, passionately encouraging them to become actively involved in addressing this critical issue.
In her conversation with Dean Bay, Fonda reflected on her upbringing in 1930s California, recalling how she spent her childhood outdoors, enjoying activities like swimming in the state's oceans and hiking in its mountains. She emphasized how being immersed in nature always provided her with a sense of comfort. Seeing how pollution and wildfires affected California’s flora and fauna, Fonda was then inspired to become involved in climate activism. She used her status in Hollywood, her connections, and her love for storytelling to organize and work alongside other activists to help bring change to these pressing issues.
Her love for the planet and wildlife led Jane Fonda to team up with Greenpeace USA to start Fire Drill Fridays (FDF) in Washington D.C. These monthly gatherings aim to rally activists, young people, Indigenous leaders, climate experts, scientists, famous people, and anyone who cares about the earth to participate in peaceful protests. Together, they urge elected leaders to take action on the climate crisis.
Fonda ended her conversation with a call to action, calling on the younger generations to do the work. She passionately encourages them to actively engage in the battle against climate change by becoming involved in organizations and participating in protests. Fonda recognizes the critical role journalists can play in fighting climate change. Recognizing the fear often associated with climate change news coverage, Fonda believes journalism and storytelling are still powerful tools that can help educate those around us.
“Stay true to your beliefs, and hold people accountable for protecting our planet. Join the fight, spread the word, and join an organization. You young people can help make a difference. We need massive outside pressure to see the change we want to see.”
